Britannia Hotel, fish the world’s best salmon rivers.

Britannia Hotel has a long, proud history of hosting fishing enthusiasts who come to fish the world’s best salmon rivers.

When the hotel opened its doors for the first time on 14 June 1870, considerable thought had already been invested in its name. Britannia was designed to appeal to travelling British ladies and gentlemen, who journeyed here to fish the river Nidelva and the other salmon-rich tributaries of the Trondheim Fjord.

‘We speak English and we serve tea at 5pm’ read a sign placed outside the entrance by the hotel’s founder, Andreas Myhre. A simple gesture recognizing the burgeoning marketplace for foreign, sport-loving tourists, craving some home luxuries.

This summer, Britannia Hotel has the pleasure to offer a very special package for salmon fishing enthusiasts who are looking to fish on one of the world’s best rivers, the Guala.

Gaula is a world-famous fishing destination. The river has a steady and plentiful supply of salmon throughout the season. Guests at Britannia can now secure a two-nights stay, in a purpose-built cabin on one of the river’s most lucrative spots, with exclusive access to both sides of the river, all meals, transport and several luxury touches.

The Britannia Exclusive Fishing Package includes:

  • Accommodation a stone’s throw from the river, on one of the Gaula’s most sought after stretches (double and single rooms available)
  • Fishing rights on both sides of the river for the duration of your stay, exclusive to guests on the Britannia Fishing Package (maximum five guests per stay)
  • All fishing equipment including waders, flies, and a choice of reel rods or fly-fishing rods.
  • Expert fishing instructor on site for the duration of your stay, plus Britannia host on site
  • Full board including breakfast, lunch, dinner prepared by Britannia’s award-winning chefs (alcoholic drinks included with meals)
  • Snacks, tea & coffee and refreshments throughout the day
  • Transport to and from Britannia Hotel
  • Guests can choose to stay at Britannia Hotel before or after their fishing excursion (the riverside cabin is approximately 45 minutes from the center of town). The hotel is the perfect place to relax and unwind after several days experiencing some of the best sport fishing in the world. Sitting in the comfort of the plush Britannia Bar, sipping on a drink and discussing the size of your catch to fellow travelers, is a special feeling which has change little over the past century and a half at Britannia Hotel.

Step in the footsteps of the Salmon Lords

The Guala fishing package from Britannia Hotel is available exclusively between 16th and 24th August 2023. To make a reservation or enquire about availability for the 2024 season, guests are invited to contact concierge@britannia.no.

The Gaula River is particularly well known for the size of its salmon and for the quantity landed; around 8,000 salmon over a season. The average weight is around 4.5 kilos, though we often see guests bringing in much larger catches. If you are serious about your sport and want to fly fish in one of the most rewarding stretches in the world, then this represents one of the pinnacles of the sport.

The salmon fishing season in Britannia runs from 1st June to 31st August every year. During this period, exclusively for staying guests at Britannia, we have secured the right to fish a stretch of the river Nidelven, just 10 minutes away from the hotel. You can reserve up to five passes from Concierge, each granting the recipient 24-hours unlimited fishing. Furthermore, top-notch equipment hire comes as part of the package, including waders, flies, and a choice of reel rods or fly-fishing rods. And we will provide you and your party with a tasty picnic hamper, full of all the delicacies you have come to expect from Britannia’s eminent kitchen, to keep you nourished for the fishing ahead.

This is just one of the many packages and experiences on offer to the intrepid traveler who comes to Trondheim, a city known for its beautiful pristine nature, clean air, wide open spaces and world-leading food scene. Plan your next adventure with Britannia Hotel and prepare to be amazed.
